About this book

A young English solicitor named Jonathan Harker travels to the Carpathian Mountains to help a Transylvanian nobleman, Count Dracula, complete the purchase of an estate near London. The village inns warn him; the peasants press crucifixes into his hand; the wolves answer the carriage as if they were expecting it. By the time the door of Castle Dracula closes behind him, Jonathan understands, too late, that his host is not the kind of man any solicitor in London has ever drawn up papers for. Far away, in England, a young woman named Lucy Westenra begins to walk in her sleep; her best friend Mina, her three suitors, and an old Dutch doctor named Van Helsing slowly piece together the truth that has crossed the sea aboard a ship full of earth. Bram Stoker's vampire novel, retold in five lean chapters that keep the diaries, the fog, the hunt across Europe, and the final sunset at the Borgo Pass exactly where they belong: at the dark heart of the story.

JONATHAN HARKER’S JOURNAL (Kept in shorthand.) 3 May. Bistritz.--Left Munich at 8:35 P. M., on 1st May, arriving at Vienna early next morning; should have arrived at 6:46, but train was an hour late. Buda-Pesth seems a wonderful place, from the glimpse which I got of it from the train and the little I could walk through the streets.
